While the scale of water damage will usually depend on the time before it’s treated, it also largely depends on the source of water. In most homes, leaks usually come from one of 3 main sources. Hopefully by becoming aware of the most common problems, you’ll be able to take steps to prevent it from ever getting to the stage of damage.
1. Clogged gutters
A major source of water damage in many homes, and one that’s very easily preventable is clogged gutters. The purpose of gutters is to draw water away from the roofs of your property to stop it from flowing over the building. Ideally, this water then drains into the ground or a drainage system.
However, once the gutters become clogged, then the water begins to spill over the side. If this happens, and you live in a rainy area, the walls of your home can stay constantly wet, which leads to a number of problems. These include damp and deterioration of materials. Considering this is an easy one to solve, it’s not worth letting it become a problem.
2. Flat roofs
Most roofs are built with a slight slant to them, which allows rainwater to run off. This, of course, helps to prevent water damage to the property. While it’s very rare that a roof will be properly flat, as even so-called flat roofs will have a slight incline, this can be impacted by other factors.
For example, if the roof wasn’t built to a high standard, it could warp or deteriorate, or your property could’ve sunk into the earth. Alternatively, a buildup of debris, such as sticks and leaves, could cause water to sit on the roof. Whatever the reason, sitting water on the roof can increase the chances of leaks and water damage.
3. Leaky pipes
The final most common cause of water damage in the home is, of course, leaking pipes. Pipes can leak for a number of reasons, include deterioration of the materials, cracks caused by freezing, rust, or even too much pressure on a loose valve. All of these issues can cause a pipe to burst, or possibly worse, just leak slowly without anyone noticing for a while.
A leaking pipe can cause significant amounts of damage if left unchecked for too long. Aside from damaging furniture and carpets, it can lead to damp and fungi and mold growth. All of this can cause health problems, and is again easily preventable with proper maintenance.
